1. Castles and Silver Mines
Duration: 3 hours
Walking Time: 2.5 hours
Walking Distance: 4km
Track: Gravel and forest paths. Some uphill.
Difficulty: Easy
Departures: 9:00am from the Nature Reserve Visitor Centre in Gerfalco
Description: This guided hike takes you within the Provincial Nature Reserve “Cornate e Fosini” which provides nearly 1000 hectares of natural, cultural and archaeological treasures. Flora endemic only to this area, the impressive Fosini Castle built on a rocky outcrop and medieval silver mines hidden in the most unexpected of places are only a few of the highlights of this special walk.

2. Chiusdino and San Galgano
Duration: 3.5 hours
Walking time: 3 hours
Walking distance: 10km
Track: Forest paths and fields. Mostly flat and light downhill.
Difficulty: Easy
Departures: 9:00am from Tourist Office in Chiusdino
Description: From the hill top village of Chiusdino, take in the breath taking views of Tuscan countryside as you descend into the Merse River Valley (Val di Merse). Trails that have seen all walks of life lead towards the famous Abbey of San Galgano and the chapel housing the mystifying sword in the stone, alleged to have been placed by the Saint himself.
3. Montieri and La Canonica
Duration : 3 hours
Walking time: 2.5 hours
Walking distance: 4km
Track: Rocky, forest paths and paved streets. Initial climb for 800m then rolling path before descending.
Difficulty: Moderate
Departures: 9:00am from Tourist Office in Montieri
Description: Montieri was once of great political importance due to its rich silver deposits and its historical centre still boasts evidence of the activity from the 12th and 13th centuries. Leaving the cobbled streets of Montieri behind you, start climbing the “poggio” of Montieri, the hill that dominates and protects the village. Along the way are old mines and ruins that relate to the mining activities that were once the mainstay of the population. Old mule paths lead you to “Il Piano” where families gather for picnics and summer antics under the shade of majestic chestnut trees and then your guide will reveal the latest archaeological treasure to recently be uncovered: the San Niccolò ecclesiastical complex known as La Canonica, featuring a church with the unique construction of 6 apses.
4. The Steaming White Hills of Le Biancane
Duration: 3 hours
Walking time: 2.5 hours
Walking Distance: 2.5km
Track: Rocky and at times steep for short periods.
Difficulty: Moderate
Departures: 9:00am InfoPoint in Monterotondo Marittimo
Description: The trails of “Le Biancane” are representative of the relationship between the town of Monterotondo Marittimo and geothermal energy. As a result of the geothermal activity (steam vents, boiling ponds and extraordinary heat coming from the earth) the natural habitat is quite different from that of the surrounding areas and is of great interest. In addition, one can enjoy spectacular views of the archipelago of islands off the coast.
5. Lago dell’Accesa
Duration: 3 hours
Walking time: 2.5 hours
Walking Distance: 5.5km
Track: Forest paths and fields, gravel paths. Gently rolling terrain.
Difficulty: Easy
Departures: 9:00am from Fenice Capanne (near Massa Marittima)
Description: Paths lined with Mediterranean vegetation and vineyards that guide you to panoramic viewpoints over the Gulf of Follonica, past remains of Etruscan and Medieval mine shafts and finally to the clear waters of lake Accesa whose banks reveal the archeological site of an Etruscan necropolis.
6. From Monti to Merse
Duration: 3 hours
Walking time: 2.5 hours
Walking distance: 7km
Track: Forest paths and river banks, altitude changes of 120m
Difficulty: Moderate
Departures: 9:00am Farmhouse/Agriturismo I Monti
Description: Leaving your panoramic holiday home, descend down into the valley of the River Merse and follow its course until veering off to visit Miranduolo castle; a site still under excavation bringing new medieval history to life. To return to Agriturismo I Monti you will follow forested paths that slowly but surely take you uphill, revealing without warning breathtaking views of the valley below.
