WINE TASTING SAN GIMIGNANO
Agriturismo Niccolai is part of Azienda agricola Palagetto, a typical Tuscan concern which consists of a group of farmhouses, originally farmers’ adobes, surrounded by cultivated hills where in ancient times they produced everything the family may need: wheat for bread, oil for seasoning, and wine, which was kept in typical flasks and drunk in feast days only. Today Azienda agricola Palagetto, an important local concern with 70hectares of land shared among vineyards (40hectares), olive groves (20hectares), sown fields, and woodland. The modern estate facilities include: the cellar, the tasting room, and the estate mill. The Estate Palagetto also owns a small farm in Montalcino, where they produced an excellent Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and an inviting Rosso di Montalcino DOC.
Vineyards and Olive groves
The vineyards, that have been recently replanted, mainly consists of autochthonous vines that produce important local wines such as Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Sangiovese, Colorino, Malvasia, Trebbiano, and Vermentino. In the estate there are small plots of vineyards with different types of vines, such as Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, whose grapes are skilfully blended to obtain the excellent wines of the Azienda Agricola Palagetto, known and appreciated all over the world. The olive groves, all planted in a hilly position, are shared among the typical local varieties: frantoiano, leccino, moraiolo and pendolino. In the estate there are seven thousand olive trees and the whole oil production is obtained in the estate mill.
Vine cellar & Wine tasting
The modern and efficient wine cellar was built in 2003. It is divided in two different areas for white wine and for red wine making, and boasts a fascinating barrels and barriques stockroom, a bottling room, and a storage for refinement in bottle. Next to the cellar there is a lovely and professional tasting room, and direct sale of the estate products.
The mill
Azienda Agricola Palagetto has its own estate mill. This is quite unusual in Tuscany, where mills are often independent concerns. At Palagetto, from late October to December, visitors can attend the oil making process and the magic moment when olives are pressed according to traditional methods and to strict quality standards to obtain an excellent extra-virgin olive oil.
