The Cerreto farmhouse is a traditional sharecropping house located along the ancient network of small roads laid out by the Olivetan monks.
As you make the short drive or half-hour walk from Pienza to our agriturismo, you follow the same path described by Pope Pius II (founder of Pienza, formerly known as Enea Silvio Piccolomini) in his ‘Commentarii’, after he went to Sant'Anna in Camprena during the second half of the XV century. The traditional Cerreto farmhouse, which seamlessly blends with the harmonious green landscape around it, was first built by local stonemasons in the XVIII and XIX centuries and is perfectly preserved.
Our agriturismo is perched on a hill in the middle of a natural oasis that leads out to the west where the Tuoma stream conceals the ruins of an ancient mill powered by a vertical hydraulic wheel. The Tombolone waterfall is home to a wide variety of wildlife and ancient, water-dwelling ‘divinities’. The area around our farmhouse was cleared from the thick forest by peasants over the last few centuries and is now richly cultivated.
Centuries-old olive trees and rows of grapevines alternate in fields cultivated according to traditional farming practices. The forest lies just beyond the agriturismo’s property, with paths that wind over the stream and through the surreal Crete landscape in the distance. This is the classic landscape of the Val d’Orcia, where the golden calcified rock and tree-covered hills rise up from the poetic solitude of the clay badlands of the valley floor.
Our guests can enjoy living in the traditional ways of our past, close to historical town centers yet far enough away from the bustle of modern life. The farmhouse is characterized by a simple, rustic style and is divided into separate units along with common spaces built around structural emblems of traditional farming life: the fireplace, kitchen hearth and loggiato. These elements are integrated with other features that combine traditional and modern comforts.
Our apartments accommodate 2 to 7 people each. The agriturismo’s maximum capacity is 22 guests. Cerreto is surrounded by small roads and paths that are ideal for walking or mountain bike rides that start right outside
the farmhouse.
When you first open the windows each morning, you will feel you’ve stepped into a different world. CERRETO’s Products
We produce our own extra-virgin olive oil, DOC wine, jams and fresh produce.
OUR WINE
Our vineyards are located at an altitude of 480 m above sea level, on land composed of sandy and calcium clay loam marl with strata of galestro (a characteristic rock formed of clay and calcium carbonate, which tends to peel when exposed to air.
The cultivation system is Cordone Speronato on the youngest vines, where a higher density of planting reduces the production by plant in order to be able to harvest mature grapes, even in less favorable vintages.
OUR OIL
Cerreto extra virgin olive oil comes from the wise mixture of olives produced by the three most important Tuscan olive crops: "Frantoio," "Leccino" and "Moraiolo."
The olives are collected by hand directly from the tree very early in the season helps to produce oil richer in vitamins and nutritional elements capable of long conservation. The olives must be taken quickly to the mill to be pressed.

OUR WINE
Our vineyards are located at an altitude of 480 m above sea level, on land composed of sandy and calcium clay loam marl with strata of galestro (a characteristic rock formed of clay and calcium carbonate, which tends to peel when exposed to air.
The cultivation system is Guyot and Cordone Speronato on the youngest vines, where a higher density of planting reduces the production by plant in order to be able to harvest mature grapes, even in less favorable vintages.
Our production per hectarea is approximately 7,000/7,500 Kg.
Harvesting takes place when phenolic maturity of the grapes allows it, reducing astringency and the green and vegetal notes in the wine, typical of the Sangiovese, which is our primary vintage.
Grapes are collected by hand and transported immediately to the cellar near the vineyards. Here, they are plucked, crushed and transferred to the fermentation casks by means of modern equipment that, working gently, guarantees preservation of the aroma and minimum formation of lees in the finished wine.
Fermentation, traditional in red, takes place in stainless steel casks at a temperature no greater than 30°C. Reassembly and delestage guarantee a complete and respectful extraction of the polyphenolic components (color and tannins) for a period varying from 10 to 15 days according to the season, and thus the degree of maturation of the grapes.
On completion of the alcoholic fermentation and soon after drawing off, the wine is kept at a temperature of no less than 20/22° C and in contact with its fine lees to promote malo-lactic fermentation, essential for its future stablization and to obtain a softer and less acidic taste.
At this point, the wine is ready to be transferred into wooden containers, where it will complete its maturation and will remain for approximately 10 months before being placed in bottles.
OUR OIL
Cerreto extra virgin olive oil comes from the wise mixture of olives produced by the three most important Tuscan olive crops: "Frantoio," "Leccino" and "Moraiolo." The olives are collected by hand directly from the tree very early in the season helps to produce oil richer in vitamins and nutritional elements capable of long conservation. The olives must be taken quickly to the mill to be pressed.
Huge granite rollers transform them into a uniform paste that is then cold-pressed. After the water is separated from the oil by centrifugal action, Extra-Virgin Olive oil is stored is stored in stainless steel containers and clarified through sedimentation. Oil obtained from pressing has a leaf-green color with more or less intense green reflections. It is light but savory, with an intense fruity olive fragrance.
The slight peppery sensation noted at the base of the palate and the slightly bitter aftertaste are the characteristics of an olive oil product collected by hand when olives are not excessively mature. The level of acidity is extremely low, normally less than 0.3%, well below the 1% imposed by Europe regulations to be defined as extra virgin oil.
Extra virgin olive oil from our company is perfect for use in the kitchen, but it certainly gives its best with salad and any food needing pure oil. A characteristic dish allowing appreciation and evaluation of extra virgin olive oil is represented by "fettunta" or "bruschetta" (toasted bread seasoned with extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and a pinch of salt). Even "pinzimonio" (raw seasonal greens with extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper) represents an excellent solution for putting high quality oil to the test. Thanks to its high concentration, only a small quantity is necessary to improve any dish.
In addition to seasoning good cooking, with its incomparable characteristics suiting all ages, in every condition of health and sickness, olive oil represents an authentic "biological conquest", passed down through the millennia by our ancestors. Olive oil is, in fact one of the typical products of the heritage of Mediterranean people recognized from antiquity for its special nutritional, hygienic, healing and therapeutic properties.
